Training Gear and Tools
Pull up Bar (For Home Use):
I like having a pull up bar in a doorway for access whenever I pass through my living room into my kitchen. You could put yours anywhere (depending on the design and “look” of your home).
Having a pull up bar easily accessible is great for accumulating training volume with the Grease the Groove Training Method. I simply do a couple pull ups when I feel like it to help me accumulate a ton of reps with the pull up.
It’s also great to have when snow or inclement weather prohibits me from getting to my studio– at least I can get in some pull ups, leg raises and body weight exercises.
The model I would recommend is the Perfect Pull Up Pull up Bar. It screws into your doorway (unlike some bars, which require you to keep a door open to hold the bar up). The design is relatively unobtrusive and you feel safe knowing it can hold up to xx lbs.
Setting up the bar takes an hour or so (depending on your skills) but is relatively foolproof. Once it is set up, there is no maintenance– enjoy it when you want it!
This is the model I purchased, if you are interested in getting started with pull ups for less than $20.
For (Home) Gym
Ethos Power Rack from Dicks Sporting Goods.
I like this combination squat/power rack and pull up bar because users can choose between overhand/underhand, neutral, wide grip neutral and angled grips/
It also has a thick bar behind, which can really help you build your grip strength!
I use this bar daily and I feel confident having my clients (various abilities and sizes) use it too. It is really durable and a great value.
I felt this was a great price for the quality and versatility of the piece, for a home gym or even for commercial use with 1-1 clients.
Rings:
These are the rings I chose for my personal training studio. They are adjustable height and really durable, plus a great price.
I use these often for ring pull ups, skin-the-cats, etc. I feel really confident in the quality and safety, and for under $80, the price really can’t be beat without sacrificing quality.
Climbing Ropes:
I chose this model because the user reviews were really good. It is a strong rope and you feel very secure climbing it. Safety was my number 1 priority so I went with Rogue because it seemed the safest and others felt similarly, plus Rogue is a really trusted brand in the fitness industry for Crossfit Gyms and commercial training studios.
I chose the 25 foot rope (I have really tall ceilings in my studio), but you may need less height for your home gym. At under $100, I felt this was a great tool every pull up enthusiast should have.
My only complaint is that the rope frays a bit at first, leaving little pieces on your floor. If you have the patience to run the vacuum for 30 seconds or so after finishing your rope climbs, this rope is a great choice and worth the small investment.
Chalk:
I’d recommend this chalk if your hands get sweaty! Chalk can help you get an extra rep or two or hold on to the bar just a tad longer, so I feel for $7 it is well worth it!
